Assistant metro editor/nights
Managed the newsroom in the evenings and supervised the night reporter. Edited news stories and posted updates to the newspaper’s website. Coordinated coverage with other editors. Served as weekend city editor on a rotating basis. (August 2003 – December 2005)
Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN
Copy editor
Edited metropolitan and state news as a member of the night general assignment team. Occasionally served as a slot editor, overseeing the work of other copy editors. (May 2001 – July 2003)
• Recipient of in-house Flash Award for showing initiative in coaching and mentoring young editors, 2003.

Edited city and suburban news. Worked with reporters and project editors as the copy editor for several special investigative projects. (February 1998 – April 2001)
• Copy editor for “Gateway to Gridlock,” a special series on air-travel problems that won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting, 2001.
• Copy editor for “The Failure of the Death Penalty in Illinois,” a special series that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, 2000.

Participated in the operation and management of a 20,000-circulation independent daily student newspaper as a full-time professional employee. Ran the training program for beginning student reporters, taught weekly journalism classes, critiqued the newspaper, tracked students’ progress, and advised students of job and internship opportunities. (October 1994 – January 1998)
• Helped lead the student staff to strong showings in several state and national competitions, including a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Crown honoring the Collegian as one of the six best college newspapers in the nation, 1997.
